Back to the Farm

Most of the day has gone into the road, Ember riding next to him while the highway runs out. The last hour Andy spends not exactly driving. His hands know this stretch by memory – the bend where the county line dips, the one field that always turns gold a week ahead of its neighbors. Five years since his last visit, and the land has kept every promise. Beside him, Ember watches more than she talks, with the quiet courtesy of someone observing another person arrive home.

The gate swings, the porch fills, and the welcome is warmer than Andy has braced himself for. His father and stepmother take to Ember right away, and the introductions go so smoothly it almost unsettles him. Looking for something familiar, he heads for the barn to find his stepsister. Mia glances up from a stall, and for one long second the face isn't one he can match to a name. Then it is, and that is somehow worse.
